    The Department of Graphic Design, Apparel Design, Retail and Consumer Studies, and Product Design (GARP) in the College welcomes applications for Part-Time Instructors to teach designated courses based on the following areas according to the needs of the program:
    • Apparel design
    • Technical design
    • Functional clothing design
    • Patternmaking
    • Apparel and soft goods construction
    • CAD systems (Clo and Optitex)
    • Styling
    • Quality analysis and assurance
    • Presentation
    • Trend Analysis
    • Competitive Analysis
    • Consumer Analysis
    • Sourcing and Textile Understanding
    • Design Processes (human-centered design)Applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match an opening. This posting is designed to establish a pool of instructors. Applications will be reviewed when openings occur throughout the academic year/summer. Current Openings in the Department:
      We especially encourage and seek professionals with experience teaching or working in the apparel industry to apply. Courses cover a variety of topics from traditional to digital design. Successful applicants will have a deep understanding of apparel design practice (preferably through applied experiences), which enable them to teach apparel design courses to undergraduates at all levels within the College of Design and across the University. Desired degree requirements are a Bachelor's or Master's and at least 5 years of industry experience in apparel design, soft goods products, or a related field, or a terminal degree comparable to the MFA or PhD in apparel design or a related field. Appointment DetailsThis is a temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) position, paid on a per course basis. These appointments are typically arranged semester by semester and employment is contingent upon the course meeting its enrollment target.Responsibilities
      • Provide instructional delivery based on the course objectives and student learning outcomes defined by the program faculty and within the time scheduled for the course(s).
      • Teach class each week as scheduled and deliver course content.
      • Hold office hours each week to allow students access outside of the classroom.This position is contributing to and supporting the mission of our land-grant institution.


        Qualifications





        Required Qualifications
        • A Master's or Bachelor's degree.
        • At least 5 years working professionally in the subject field or a closely related discipline.
        • Experience working professionally in the apparel or soft goods industry.
        • Evidence of competence to teach in the content area.
        • Proven excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
        • Evidence of attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching.Preferred Qualifications
          • A terminal degree in your subject field (Ph.D. or MFA) in apparel design or a closely related discipline.
          • Professional teaching experience with a focus in apparel design.
          • Technologically innovative approach to teaching.
          • Experience working collaboratively with academic departments and in the community.

            About the Department





            The Department of Graphic Design, Apparel Design, Retail and Consumer Studies, and Product Design (GARP) is one of two academic departments in the College of Design. GARP has over 730 undergraduate majors and over 80 graduate students. It serves as the administrative support to five undergraduate programs leading to a B.S. in Apparel Design, Product Design, and Retail and Consumer Studies, User Experience Design; and a BFA in Graphic Design. We offer four degree options in either Design or Human Factors and Ergonomics at the graduate level--Master of Science, Master of Fine Arts, and Ph.D. We offer minor degrees in design, fashion studies, human factors and ergonomics, user experience design, retail merchandising and product design.The College of Design is committed to attracting candidates from historically underrepresented groups knowing that diversity enriches the academic experience and provides a knowledge base for innovation.
